Vintage McDonald's Halloween TV Spot!

272 days. That is the amount of time we have left until Halloween 2014. If it seems like a long ways off that's because it is a long ways off. A long, long ways off.

Still... doesn't mean we cannot periodically indulge in a little bit of spooky-fun Besides with the Christmas Season officially behind us, and give or take a few rag-tag holidays in between, Halloween is basically the next truly big event on the horizon.

And that is all the reason I need to occasionally toss out a few bits of Halloween Content between now and October 31st. So let's kick things off with this vintage McDonald's Halloween TV spot!

For as much as the Halloween Season has grown and progressed over the years, it seems to have taken a drastic step backwards in terms of how its marketed. I remember a time when Halloween was still spooky and creepy and damn proud of it.

Just take a look at this old McDonald's TV commercial. It's disturbing. And not in the traditional McDonald's "holy shit look at this food" kind of way. But in a legit spooky monster and mayhem kind of way.

So enjoy this throwback TV commercial of old. Enjoy what is left of this last Friday in January. And I'll be back after the weekend is over with a brand new article that I'm sure you'll all get a kick out of!

Winter + Peppermint Oreo Roundup!

Offshoot variations of Oreo cookies used to feel like something special. You'd get the orange kind around Halloween and a red variation on Christmas and that was pretty much that.

However in recent years the folks at Nabisco have seemingly went insane and decided that every singe occasion known to mankind must be commemorated with a new Limited Edition Oreo Cookie.

It's gotten to a point that when I see new versions of Oreo's on store shelves, I am almost inclined to walk right by them. Hardly giving a passing glance to whatever it is they have to offer.

Even when the new flavors are downright crazy, like Watermelon Oreo's, I tend to pass them up just for the sake of not having to spend a couple thousand words on the same stupid subject again.

Still. In the middle of last seasons Christmas Madness I had a hard time passing up the opportunity to splurge purchase a couple bags of Winter Edition and Peppermint Creme Oreo Cookies.

A quick scan of past articles proves that I have already covered the Winter Edition bag all the way back in November of 2011. I hesitantly will link you to that article, and casually remind everyone that apparently I didn't understand the concept of paragraphs back then.

By in large Winter Edition Oreo's appear to be unchanged from 2011 through 2013. And with that statement what I really meant to say is they are the same fucking thing as before. Down to the snowman on the front of the package and all!

Ehhh, you know what I'm fine with this. Perhaps because we are well past the threshold of when a person should be writing about seasonal Christmas bullshit like this, but mostly it comes down the fact that I like having certain holiday items are the same every Holiday Season.

The star of today's show, however, is clearly Peppermint Oreo's. Perhaps they were a new item for 2013... perhaps not. It's more intriguing to leave the debut date a bit of a mystery. Though it seems to me that I've seen something like this available for years now.

But like I stated at the start of this article with so many different variations of these cookies are available it is hard to tell if I am remembering the Peppermint kind or the Candy Cane kind. Yes Candy Cane Oreo's are a thing that exist too.

Is there even a difference? Honestly is there a difference between Peppermint and Candy Cane? I've never really thought about it until right-the-fuck now and it is secretly driving me nuts not knowing the correct answer.

Lets Ask Jeeves. Wait a minute, Jeeves is defunct and hasn't been relevant since 2005. Now we'll never know if Peppermint and Candy Cane are the same damn thing or not!

Anyhow... Oreo Cookies. You guys really want details? I feel like this article has already stretched on for considerably longer than it should have. So I'll keep this part short and sweet.

When you finally decide to pry back that sealed tab on the front of the package be prepared to get hit in the face with the smell of peppermint. It's strong. Almost overpowering. But in the best way possible.

I'm convinced that Nabisco could make a killing in the air freshener industry. Seemingly the best part of all these wacky cookie concepts is the initial smell that comes out of the box. I'd love to bottle it and wear it as deodorant. Or at the very least make my cars interior smell like it.

They taste pretty much exactly how you would expect. Sort of like peppermint but not really anything like peppermint. Not that it matters much. I have a theory that nobody buys them because the want to eat Oreo's that taste like peppermint. We all just want to eat the Christmas Season in as many different ways as possible. Nabisco is just helping us all fulfill the primordial need to digest Santa Claus.

In conclusion this should wrap up the remainder of my 2013 Christmas Countdown. It only took well into the month of January for it to happen but I think we've finally reached the end.

So we'll all take a break. Put the holidays on hold. For now. You guys know as well as I do these things seem to start sooner and sooner every year. I half expect to be writing about pumpkins and reindeer in July.

Cranberry Sprite!

Originally something I wanted to include in the 2013 Christmas Countdown, Cranberry Sprite's time to shine as perhaps already come and gone.

Christmas is over. New Years has past. And chances are the last thing on anyone's mind is Santa Claus and the limited edition sights and sounds that accompany his arrival. Still, it doesn't seem right to let this one slip through the cracks and not give it some sort of attention.

For years now I've sang the praises of Siera Mist: Cranberry Splash. Who sort of stands as the undisputed king of Christmas beverages. It's arrival (and subsequent departure) is one of my personal 'road markers' for when the Christmas Season has officially arrived and when its closure is finally here.

I find ways to fit Cranberry Splash into every Christmas Countdown despite the fact that it has remained largely unchanged for years now. I do so for a number of reasons but chief among them is the fact that Cranberry Splash is just flat out a darn good flavor of soda!

Which is why it has always sort of surprised me that no other company has attempted to dethrone Siera Mist from its self proclaimed title of Christmas Kingdom. That is until now.

Cranberry Sprite is an admirable first effort into the seasonal beverage market... but man oh man does this one fall far off from the intended target.

She tastes not really like cranberries nor like traditional Sprite either. It has this sort of a vaguely undefined quality about it that's kind of hard to pinpoint.

Upon the first sip you'll almost immediately "get" what Cranberry Sprite is all about. The deeper you dive into the bottle the higher the risk becomes that you'll burn out on this beverage. It's good but perhaps not 20 ounces worth of good. I ended up tossing a little under half of mine.

Perhaps my biggest point of contention is the fact that the soda is clear. Look, I fully understand that is Sprite's overall gimmick... being a crystal clear beverage in a sea of colored soft-drinks. But this is one of those times that rules should be tossed aside and the colored dye tossed deep into the mix!

I mean if you are going to create a Christmas themed soda. And if said soda is supposed to taste like cranberries, then that sucker better be red beyond repair! If not at least give us the holly-jolliest label this side of the North Pole.

Cranberry Sprite did a whopping... neither. For a soda apparently poised to take on king Cranberry Splash, it really feels like Cranberry Sprite stumbled and fell flat on its face.

It was a drink that I wanted to love. I wanted to gush about, yet seemed destined to do everything within its power make me shun it. Perhaps that is why I'm writing about it at the end of January as opposed to the middle of December, back when it was still readily available in stores.

The chances of anyone finding a bottle now are slim and quickly approaching the ever illusive "none". Just like the actual Christmas Season of 2013, its time has all but come and gone.

Though I do look forward to seeing if Sprite will attempt to revamp its flavor for the '14 festivities. It's a long, long way off (335 days but who is counting?) but when we get there... it'll be interesting to see if Cranberry Sprite will be along for the ride!

Returning from the Dead!

What in the world just happened? The entire month of December has come and gone, taking with it another Christmas season... and somehow I let it all slip by without writing a single post.

This irks me to no end, trust me. I love writing about the holidays, particularly the long stretch at the end involving Halloween and Christmas. And its not like I didn't have lots planned for Christmastime '13 ... unfortunately a long and strange series of events unfolded in my life and I simply did not have the time necessary to publish anything noteworthy.

Besides I'd rather keep the quality of my content high as opposed to simply pumping out fluff-filled articles for the sake of filling time and space.

So yea... this years Christmas Countdown was pretty shitty. I apologize for that one. However the new year is upon us and from this point forward I plan on moving forward with a whole host of new content!

To kick things off here is a video I made featuring the first "big" Halloween purchase of 2014! Enjoy and look for more featured content within the coming days!
